A Bird's Life

I know I have written so often about the view outside my office window here on the Mountain at Sewanee. Indulge me once again as I marvel at the wildlife and beauty I am treated to on a daily basis.

For quite a few weeks now, there have been regular visits to the large tree outside my window by a pileated woodpecker. He is breathtaking! He is quite large and always makes a grand appearance on one of the flimsier branches before he makes his way to the old vine that snakes up the tree in a mass of tangle. Once on the old vine, he is ready to go to work. I admit to stopping whatever I am doing to stare in awe of this little guy. He is quite extraordinary! I've even had coworkers come from neighboring offices to get a look at this handsome fellow. He does strike quite a pose for us...as if he knows we're peering at him through the window.

I have also had a new family of visitors in the last two weeks. What I believe is a flock of Carolina Chickadee has also visited the tree, sometimes at the same time as Mr. Woodpecker, although they do not seem to hang around long when he drops by. He is at least triple their size!

I love my view and my daily visits by birds, deer, chipmunks, squirrels and the occasional dog on the loose. I just love the world outside my window!

How exciting to see such a rare bird at your window! (What super photos you were able to get!) I love seeing each new bird and squirrel that spends time at my feeder or in the back yard. They are so precious!

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words about the post and the photos! I feel as though I've mislead you, though! I didn't take the pictures! Nope, I nabbed them from the internet because I couldn't get a decent picture of my woodpecker through the window...the glare would show up in each of them! While I did give credit to the sites from which I "borrowed" the pictures, I made the type smaller, so it probably wasn't very noticeable. I'd love to take credit for them, though! Aren't they wonderful photos?!?! Alas, they are not mine.

I ADORE birds. I have this "thing" for antique bird prints and illustrations! *sigh*

The birds are so colorful in your climate. We get a lot of hawks -- they're so majestic and I love seeing the bald eagles. But I would love to see cardinals and the red feathered birds. Spectacular pictures!

. . . wherever they're from!

Hi Paula,
What a wonderful shot of the woodpecker looking right at you. I love it when the critters do that. Even though you didnt take it, I appreciate seeing it.

We have a pair of pileated woodpeckers that live in one of our trees, but they rarely come close enough for a picture. We have about 20 chickadees and 40 or so goldfinches, a couple of pairs of cardinals, and the occasional red belly woodpecker who feast on the sunflower seeds I put in the feeders on the deck. We all love watching them.
